A Powerful Gift

When friends get together something nearly magical happens. If the gathering is based on a sad event, the tension is eased and there is comfort. When the group units for something fun, it’s almost like an explosion of smiles and relaxation. The dynamics of the group takes over and people are helping each other without a second though or maybe even a word.
We had a knitting group retreat followed by our annual (and only) craft fair. The retreat nearly fell through because the planner – who will be nameless – randomly picked a date that didn’t work for many members. But it did take place. Though small in numbers our group gathered and fell into our comfortable chatter and laughter without missing a beat. We spent our time in a cozy cottage on the banks of the Potomac River in Fall. It was lovely. Once back at home our efforts went into overdrive. We had our meeting on Wednesday, craft show set up on Friday, and the show on Saturday. We sell our items to raise funds to give away. That is clearly important. But our time spent together focused on our task and each other is also very important.
You may or may not have a group like that. I would tell you it is worth searching for. It may be at church, hiking, art, singing, playing an instrument, reading, or any number of interests which initially catches your eye. But there is nothing quite like the connection we feel with those who share a common interest. As we draw, too quickly and ever so close to the winter months, there is no better time to find your group of friends. When it is cold and dark outside your group will be like welcome sunshine. When there is a chill in the air, your group offers the warmth you need to get up and stay busy. I can’t encourage you enough to seek a place to belong. God gave us each other. It’s just one of His many gifts, but it’s powerful.
Be strong in the Lord and be kind.
