The Right Thing To Do

Recently our deacons took a day long retreat. They didn’t go anywhere exotic, and some of us teased them about their “dancing” activity, but the truth is I’m proud of them. Our deacons serve for a period time, so annually there are people cycling on and off the deacon body. I think a retreat is a great idea. On the retreat, they had an opportunity to focus on their job, learn to function as a team, and get to know each other better. They don’t get paid for their time, and they had to give up a full day of their weekend. Isn’t it good to know we have people who do something because it’s the right thing to do?
I read about a woman on a plane who helped a mother of three deal with her fussy baby. It made the news. The woman couldn’t see what the big deal was, she simply tried to help a mother in distress. But don’t you see, that is the big deal? When no one else on that packed airplane lent a hand, she did. Sure, there are lots of reasons why she could have hesitated, or even decided not to get involved, but she didn’t. She believed it was the right thing to do.
It was another red flag day, dangerous ocean currents. They thought someone had drowned in the surf, so the guards patrolled the beach telling people to get out of the water because the manpower to protect them was busy searching further up the beach. Our life guard approached a gentleman getting ready to enter the water and explained why she needed him to stay out of the ocean. He replied to her, but I am from (he gave the name of his home state). She replied, “And I like your state, but I still need you to stay out of the water.” He mumbled a few other things. She did the right thing, even though the encounter was not very pleasant.
Our days are filled with opportunities. Each opportunity brings with it a choice. Some of them more impactful than others. This week I encourage you to seek to do the right thing, each time, just because it’s the right thing to do.
Have a great week! :o) Linda
