The Thrill of New

Linda Soller | Apr 17, 2023

Sometimes the thought of something new can be thrilling. Bound and determined to learn to watercolor I was initially reluctant to start. I talked about starting, but just couldn’t get going. Eventually my friend Dot gave me a book which teaches you the basic techniques and she pretty much said, “Just start.”  Gradually I began going through my book. It was proving to be fun, even if I didn’t feel particularly gifted. Then last week I took myself to a local art supply store to pick up a few things for my latest interest. These would not be professional level items, but they would be next level for me. I was so excited. Roaming through the store, talking to the employees who know about art, and picking out my special items was wonderful. Could it be I’ve found a new hobby?

What is it that makes “new” such a thrill? Do we humans really tire so quickly of the things that have become familiar? The steps from familiar to old hat and then routine seem pretty small. Then again, let us try something new and we get that rush of excitement.

For Christians I observe the same cycle. Finding God, discovering Jesus, feeling the seeds of faith can be like nothing else you have experienced. But unfortunately, Christians can find themselves falling into a routine. They may ask themselves why they languish in the doldrums of faith so quickly. The thrill of new is gone. My thought is that much like my new hobby, with faith we must recognize we are each a work in progress. It’s up to us to learn, to grow, and to explore all God can show us. Easter has come and gone. Spring is happening all around us. Isn’t it time we tried to rediscover the thrill of “new“ when it comes to our faith?
