Lego Lesson #3

Linda Soller | Mar 14, 2022

Early on in the planning and development of our personal Lego land it became quite apparent (to me) that unbridled growth like we have grown accustomed to in Northern Virginia would not be practical in Lego land. There was limited space. My developers were not excited to add roads to accommodate the growing community. And frankly, it would cost too much. Unless I won a Lego lottery, or any lottery for that matter, there would have to be limitations. The situation presented a real grand parenting dilemma. What could I do to offset the restraints placed on me by these obstacles?

Let me just say here, that when you’re in this place of wishing you could do more than you can possibly manage, you feel like any gesture on your part is too small, not impactful, or lame. This temporary concern gave way to an idea. Why not enhance Lego land with small, affordable, and easy to handle items? With this in mind the city park got flowers, there is an ice cream cart pulled by a bike and a pizza delivery motorcycle. I could only hope the children would be distracted by these tiny additions to their community. I didn’t stop there. Why not add a street cleaner, a trash truck, and a few streetlights?

With each new little item that appeared the children found ways to connect and imagine. It turns out the street cleaner is married to the policeman, who knew? The little traveling Veterinarian car makes routine visits to each house.  Lucky pets. The pizza delivery motorcycle in the hands of a three year old can fly when it needs to in order to deliver the pizza. Who needs streets? This approach does require diligent Lego shopping to find the reasonably priced little specialty kits. It’s the least I can do.  If you get on your knees so you’re eye level with the table holding Lego land you’re transported to a bustling little town where each character and item work together, everything and everyone is contributing to the total magical result.

Lego Lesson #3 – Small things can really make a difference.

Be the love in the world!  :o)
