Lego Lesson #2

Linda Soller | Feb 21, 2022

Background for this lesson is the fact that my grandson, the youngest of the four grandchildren, would get frustrated when he didn’t have anything of his own in Lego Land at my house. The girls would share, but his options were controlled. Basically he could only use what they weren’t interested in. He’s a smart little thing and soon caught on. There were tears. That brought me to the point of Lego Lesson #1 where I found myself making some special items for my little guy. By the way, a Townhouse may have been added to the list.

It was time for the big reveal – shades of HGTV decorating shows.  I was so excited. They entered the play area and were, well, overwhelmed comes to mind. So many new things to investigate and play with lay in front of them. Everyone embraced the additions, everyone except my grandson. When prompted, he took a quick look-see, pushed a few vehicles from here to there, then promptly decided he wanted to play in the kitchen/restaurant area across the room. Playing restaurant comes in a close second to Legos. I tried to get him to come back to his new Townhouse, to see how one little guy was him and the other was supposed to be his daddy.  Nope, not really interested. Note – the older girls liked the new stuff.

There I was looking at an expanse of Lego temptations. Houses, animals, cars, shops, a Carnival (donated by the eldest granddaughter courtesy of Santa) covered two surfaces. So much to touch and imagine. The girls fell into their old patterns of contented play and the grandson was elsewhere. Where did I go wrong? More is better, right? We all do it, well many of us. We notice a speck of attention, a twinge of longing, and so we get them what they want. Pretty soon we have thrown all sorts of their “desires” at them, surely they’ll be happy. We tell ourselves that gifts (or money) will solve the problem. We think, we want them to have what we didn’t. We feel generous.

Lego Lesson #2 – More isn’t always better. Sometimes it’s just more.

Be the love in the world!  :o)
