Lego Lesson #1

Linda Soller | Jan 24, 2022

This week I am beginning what may or may not end up as a series. Lego Lessons may be my next thing. You see, my grandchildren love building and playing with Legos. As a self-proclaimed over zealous grandmother I have embraced their interest.  I may have gone a bit over board. What started, as a general playroom in our basement has rapidly become a Lego land.  There are probably multiple lessons I should have learned from this latest journey into the realm of how to get carried away with a simple idea, but my lesson this week is – know your limitations.

It began with the two oldest girls who came frequently to visit on Saturdays. We would walk, bake, and work on our fairy village. That is until the fairy village came to a point of, well, completion. There was no more space and we had done what I thought we could do. So I ordered a Lego Friends house for the girls to build. Turned out my then six year old was a natural builder, and the two girls loved it. One house was not going to serve two girls, so a second one was ordered. It only stood to reason that I should have my own house. It’s the beach house just so you know. You get the picture. Now the two younger ones want to play, but they aren’t very careful so they really need their own items.

When the oldest would build I was her assistant. My job was to have the correct pieces ready. It was a fun time for us to share and the building went a little faster. She only fired me a couple of times. Confident in my skills I decided to surprise them with a few accessory items with a few specifically for my grandson. He deserves some things in Lego land that aren’t pink. I sat down to build a structure for 8 yrs+, a vehicle for 6 yrs+, and lastly a trash truck for 4 yrs+. Here is where the lesson was learned. I am best suited to the 4-yrs+ projects. To avoid embarrassment, stress and frustration I do believe it’s important to know your limitations. This is true even outside the walls of Lego land.

Be the love in the world!  :o)
