Inclusive Grace

Linda Soller | Jan 20, 2020

The picture was powerful yet simple. Fifteen people standing in front of an old cabin wearing the white coats of physicians. A few poorly dressed children scattered about, nearly ghost like in appearance, blend into the backdrop. The idea was that of Russell Ledet, the photographer was Abedoyin Johnson. So why mention it at all? The fifteen people are medical students at Tulane University and the picture is titled, “We are our ancestor’s wildest dreams.” Yes, all the students were African Americans and indeed we can imagine they are living the lives their ancestors could only dream about. Inclusion has traveled a slow and winding road. These young people are a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

God’s grace is already inclusive. It’s always been inclusive. For some that was a hard pill to swallow. The early Christians didn’t understand how God could love and provide His grace to the gentiles. Yet, that is exactly what He did. The disciples struggled to understand, and once they did understand they tried to explain it to others. Religions during Jesus’ time on earth were seen as independent. You either believed in their gods or you didn’t. Their various gods only helped those who followed them, or so it was said. Jesus came to say the real God was different. There was/is room for all in God’s kingdom.

In a world of anger, war mongering, violence, natural disasters, starvation, and struggle there is no place for exclusion. We cannot overcome our problems by leaving others out or behind. There is only time to work together and quickly. Now is the time for all of us to understand God’s inclusive grace. His inclusive grace is where we will find hope.

Be humble, be grateful, and be love in our world this week! :o) Linda
