A Beautiful Day

Linda Soller | Jan 06, 2020

It was a beautiful day to start the New Year and new decade. Well, it was a beautiful day in northern Virginia. The temperature that day was warmer than usual, the sun brighter, and the sky was perfectly clear blue. Just the day before my mom, my cousin and I had gone to the movies to see “A Beautiful Day.” All three of us loved the movie, yet we agreed it was not what we expected in many ways. The poignant story was based on true events involving Mr. Rogers and his new friend Lloyd, a journalist.

While Mr. Rogers was big on TV long after my childhood, I was certainly familiar with the show and his comforting demeanor. His soothing voice and reassuring words brought hope and calm to many children. He sincerely felt his position, which allowed him to help others, was a gift from God. Mr. Rogers accepted people for exactly who they were. As supportive as his words were, his listening skills gave him great insight. We so often fail to really listen. Mr. Rogers would sit in silence, making eye contact with the person talking, letting them know they had his full attention.  It was an emotion charged and thought provoking movie. However, one quiet scene really stuck with me. To this day I can see it clearly. Tom Hanks, portraying Fred Rogers, is kneeling by his bed praying for people. He prayed for all the people he was aware of who needed his prayers, and he prayed for each by name.

God gives each of us gifts. We can’t predict how He will use what we do, but we can be certain He needs each of us to do what we can. Every day may not be free of problems, but every day can be a beautiful day. This year give God your full attention listen when He calls you to serve, and make each day a beautiful day in your neighborhood.

Be humble, be grateful, and be love in our world this week! Happy New Year! :o) Linda
