Full Throttle

Linda Soller | Jan 14, 2019

It was 8 a.m. on a chilly foggy Saturday morning, and I was headed to the grocery store. In my rear-view mirror I saw a black SUV coming up fast, weaving in and out of the cars on the road, no turn signals, and clearly no interest in the speed limit. The road expanded to four lanes in our direction and the SUV slid quickly into the right lane, still apparently feeling the need to go full throttle toward – somewhere. As we came around a slight turn we were met with flares on the exit ramp to my right, but directly in front of the SUV. A police officer was leaning against his car blocking the exit. The SUV had to stop, his alternate exit was three lanes to the left and only a quarter mile ahead. Suddenly the driver of the SUV found himself at the mercy of those drivers he had just recklessly driven around. Naturally everyone had slowed for the flares, so his situation was made worse by the speed we were now going. He was not able to make it to his alternate exit and was forced to join us crazy speed limit obedient drivers heading down the road for another half mile toward his third option. There he carefully made his U-turn and proceeded back toward his destination, somewhat subdued.

Sometimes I think we Christians go through life at full throttle, confident we know what we are doing and where we are going, until something stops us in our tracks. Suddenly we find ourselves stranded in the far lane trying to figure out what to do. It’s often in those times we decide to call on our faith, to ask God to step in and fix or cure what ails us. Had we relied on our faith all along, kept God in our sight as we traveled, could we have been in a better place when we met our road block? Because there will be road blocks. Are we moving so fast we don’t really notice all those who are traveling down the road around us until we need their mercy to continue? Where are you going full throttle? Assuming you can get there on your own?

Have a great week?  :o) Linda
