Just Do It

Linda Soller | Sep 26, 2016

Seems like I get home from work and find that after dinner I have little energy to do anything. It’s strange because on the nights I go straight from work to other activities I just do it. I’d been giving some thought to the situation and pretty much decided I’m lazy. Then one day I was reading an article about getting things done. Scientific studies are finding the process of just getting started seems to be where most of us struggle and fail. The more I thought about it I realized that was exactly my problem. I eat my dinner then plop down to see what is on TV. Half the time it’s something I don’t really enjoy. The next thing I know the evening is gone, and I tell myself it is too late to start something. Sound familiar?

Two weekends ago we had “Back to Church Sunday”. A church member said, “I invited my friend to come today, and she said she would. But when I called her this morning to say I would pick her up my friend said she’d gotten a late start, didn’t feel like rushing to get ready, and decided not to come.” The church member was disappointed for herself, and for her friend. I doubt the friend thought it would really make a difference to anyone. Sometimes others get hurt when we decide not to start.

A dad is surprised to find he has enough free time in his day to go watch his son play ball. Usually his days are so packed he can’t even consider leaving the office.  It’s such a rare occurrence that the opportunity leaves him a bit confused. He wonders, should he go or not? What if he goes this time, and his son starts to expect him to do it again and again? Besides, surely his son won’t be looking for him. The man sits back down and mindlessly works on little tasks that could be done the next day. Finally, he looks up and realizes enough time has passed that he can’t get to the game in time. He decides not to start something he might not be able to continue. He decides not to go. It’s another missed opportunity.

Sometimes we form bad habits without really thinking of the impact. Sometimes we choose to make a promise and then break it without thinking of who will be hurt. Sometimes we position ourselves to have excuses and miss out on the real joys of life. I encourage you to think of what you want to do, what you say you will do, and what you need to do, then just do it!

Have a great week!    : o)  Linda
