One brick at a time

Linda Soller | Sep 12, 2016

Last week I wrote about self-control. This week I wanted to share a story which I think is related to the whole self-control issue. Actually I came across it at work when reading about the personality trait of dedication. How good are you at sticking to a promise or a goal? It requires self-control.

In a town outside of Madrid, Spain there is a man by the name of Justo Gallego Martinez. As a child he saw churches destroyed and monks and priests killed, in the Spanish revolution. When he grew up he became a Trappist Monk. Unfortunately, he became very ill and his lifestyle as a monk was not good for his health. The actual day to day routine and surroundings at the monastery were impacting his recovery. He struggled with the idea of leaving the monastery.  He prayed that should he get well he would build a memorial. Long story short – although you should google it because it’s interesting – on October 12, 1961 he began his building/memorial. He had inherited the land for the building. He has no permissions or permits from the local government. Incredibly, he is building it by himself, one brick at a time. It is a “Cathedral like” building, but not a Cathedral, because it’s not sanctioned by the church. In reality it’s a demonstration of what one man’s dedication, determination, and focus can accomplish. He is keeping a promise. He exercises self-control and keeps his focus. Some people like it, and others do not, no surprise. He works on his building six days a week for ten hours a day, starting at six a.m. each morning. On Sunday he rests.

Daily we are bombarded by bad news, temptations, and sadness in the world. We often feel so helpless. That helpless feeling can eat away at our self-control, our happiness, and our ability to do God’s work. Don Justo, as he is known in his community, is an example of what one individual can accomplish. God calls us to step up, meet life’s challenges head on, keep our promises, and stand strong in our faith. All He asks is that we keep building His kingdom, one brick at a time.

Have a great week!    : o)  Linda
