A place for my Cherry Garcia ice cream

Linda Soller | Oct 21, 2013

These last few weeks I’ve come to a whole new understanding of the expression, “when it rains it pours.” And I don’t mean rainy weather, although I could give you my two cents on that topic as well.

I have been talking about selling my car or trading it in so I could get a car with four wheel drive. If you knew where I lived you would understand why I need four wheel drive. There was nothing really wrong with my current car except it was front wheel drive, so I’d made up my mind that I would replace it before the winter weather hit. Over the holiday weekend I sold it. I was left without a car and borrowed my mother’s van to use while I figure out the features I want in my new car. During this same time we decided to finally put hardwood floors in two rooms of our house instead of replacing the really disgusting carpets that are on the floors now. So the floor guy gives me a quote, which looks very good, and I set a date for new floors. To be safe an area rug was ordered to protect the new floors, and it is on its way. These big purchases are pretty much maxing out my anxiety levels in part because they are big purchases and in part because I have wanted the car and the wood floors for so long that the decisions themselves have become big deals.

Just as I am starting to adjust to the negative cash flow, I used meditation (see last week’s blog) to keep calm, I find that the freezer part of my refrigerator has died. Now let me tell you that when you move in to a house with a great yard or great appliances it is easy to think, “I’m so lucky.” But you need to smack yourself across the face and say, “think about the upkeep.” Our refrigerator is supposedly the best thing since sliced bread, but as far as I can tell it works like any other refrigerator with the one distinction that when it breaks it costs a lot to repair. The repair guy says it is old and we should replace it, but he’s suggesting we buy another fancy one. Another person says just fix it and take your chances, and another says that the repair cost would practically buy a new refrigerator so just get a new one that is affordable.

Easy for them to say, they are not driving around in their mom’s mini-van, boxing up their breakable items then stacking and stashing them who knows where around the house, wondering where the area rug will go if it arrives before the floors are finished, and throwing out what was perfectly good Cherry Garcia ice cream!

When all is said and done things will be fine. My faith tells me to trust the Lord and that he will provide. I don’t mean to imply that we will have whatever we want, but I do believe he will provide what we need. For now the mini-van is working just fine. I have learned that when you pack up your breakable items you sometimes find things you forgot you had. If the rug comes early I will walk around it and think about how nice it will be to have the wood floors I have been saving for. As for the refrigerator, I think I just need to step back and review the options. As long as it holds my Cherry Garcia, it will be fine.

Have a great week :o) Linda
