Gift Two

Linda Soller | Dec 11, 2023

Gift two is mental well-being. I’m talking about the simple things we can do to keep our minds engaged and sharp. When I thought about retirement, I was determined to keep my mind busy, which had never been a problem when I was working. Then again, it was part of doing my job. While I looked forward to some down time, I didn’t want to develop into a non-thinking lazy bum. I started by learning new things. My first new thing was learning to paint. I began with watercolor. Believe me I had no idea before I started my lessons just how much brain power would be required. The more I learn the more I think, plan, and consider. All of this is part of creating a finished project.

Even with a new interest I understood there was more I could do. I began working crossword puzzles which are known to be good for your brain activity. Next, I learned Sudoku. Number related puzzles had never really appealed to me.  I’m pretty much a beginner, but I have to say I do enjoy them. Next, I learned how to play dominoes. I won’t even try to explain what I thought the game involved, but it had nothing to do with the real game. My grandchildren love it when we play games, so I’ve taught them to play dominoes too.

Last but far from least I’ve changed my TV viewing habits.  I love watching shows where I can learn something. There are many arts, craft, history, nature, DIY, and literary based shows on the TV.  When I find a new show, I talk about it with friends. We end up learning from each other. If you think you know it all, you’re wrong. There is so much to learn.

We humans are blessed to be able to think and function as we do. God has great plans for what we can accomplish. He sees such potential in each of us.  I think continuing to learn is the gift that keeps on giving.

Be the love in the world  : )   Linda
