A Rainbow Story

Linda Soller | Jun 12, 2023

Rainbows seem a bit mystical to me. They suddenly appear, sometimes vivid and other times faint. Always colorful and strategically placed for anyone who looks to see them in the sky. Children look for the colors in the rainbow and might make a wish. As a grownup you may catch yourself wondering about that “pot of gold”. Regardless of how you view or consider them, I think we can all agree rainbows are special and real.

I remember a spectacular rainbow that led us home after my father’s last trip to the family beach vacation. We could tell by his demeanor that this would be the last time he shared this tradition. We were not wrong. But driving home that Saturday afternoon I know how uplifting it was for us to see the rainbow. Not just a glimpse but for a full hour we followed it down the road until we reached our destination. We could feel God’s presence.

Recently I attended what could only be called a joyful rainbow wedding. The young woman and man, who were married in the church packed with guests, exuded happiness. The trappings were a mix of traditional and very non-traditional. Everyone was smiling. “This is so them”, I heard someone say. The couple in their happiness and love for each other wanted to share that happiness. These two people consistently give of themselves to their families, friends, churches, and community. The number of people there was a testament to how many lives they have touched and continue to touch. With large balloons, ribbon wands, upbeat music, and a special touch of sequined rainbows this couple again brought joy to those around them.

In our troubling times it’s easy to complain, to doubt some traditions, to wonder if some things are real. It’s all too common to whine and argue. Are there really any good things in this world? Is God really watching over us in the storms?  My answer is a resounding yes. There is much good in this world and God is ever present in our lives. I could see it at the rainbow wedding. And we all know rainbows are real.
