Part of Learning

Linda Soller | Mar 31, 2025

Part of learning is that when you embrace it the learning can go on and on. I’m a person who loves to learn, but not necessarily in a classroom setting. My habit is to decide I want to try something new and then figure out who and/or what I need to learn how to do it. (The answer is not always YouTube) That is exactly what I did with watercolor. Never finding the class time when in school to take art I always wondered what it would be like to paint a picture I would be proud of. Proud enough to hang on a wall where other people could see it. I didn’t have a daily desire to paint, but when I retired it was one of the first things to come to my mind. Now I have time, I thought!

Another thing about learning is that you often learn something new about yourself. Sometimes our failures provide our greatest lessons. Sometimes we discover something about ourselves that we never knew or would have guessed. So here I sit learning something new again, all because I learned something new. My art teacher announced her students would have a student art show. Oh my gosh – what does that mean? Mats, frames, descriptions, decisions, and all because I signed up to learn how to paint in watercolor. Don’t misunderstand, we don’t have to participate, but really isn’t that what learning is about? You gather the information or skill and then you use it. Putting yourself out there can be scary and at the same time in the  planning and preparing I have learned so much. So many things we don’t even consider when we go to an Art Show. All the behind-the-scenes stuff. So much to learn.

In our faith we should be constantly striving to learn and grow. God does not hide things. He knows we want answers. He understands our human habit of asking why. God wants us to learn and to ask questions. He smiles when we put our faith out there for all to see. As you learn your faith will grow.  Oh yes and one more thing, it’s never too late to learn.

Be strong in the Lord and be kind!
