Time Swap

Linda Soller | Mar 10, 2025

This week most of us are adjusting to the switch to Daylight Savings time. I remember when I was working full time it felt like a big deal to lose an hour of sleep. As someone who is retired it’s less worrisome. I do feel badly for students and their parents who already feel like their day starts in the middle of the night. To make it more confusing not all states switch back and forth. Add the time zones and you have a formula for confusion.

What if we could really swap time? What if we could get back time we squandered or add time when we are doing something meaningful? Or how about swapping time with someone else? If they aren’t doing much they could give you some time, or vice versa. Hmm, but that would require giving of our time and for some of us that is one of the hardest gifts to give. If  you know someone who doesn’t go to church, you may hear them say – “I don’t want to get roped into serving on committees, or going to extra classes, or feeling like I have to go every Sunday, etc.” Hmm – again it’s a time thing.

Many churches today are happy to report a gradual return (post pandemic) to church attendance, but it does not equate with an increase in church membership. Some people think if they join a church, they have given up all their freedom. In reality, joining a church is gaining a relationship not going into bondage. It’s declaring you support and agree with the goals, directions, missions, and community that is the church you attend. There is no hidden time swap requirement. You remain in the driver’s seat of your resources, all of your resources. You gain a community, a connection, and a sense of direction. Your faith joins with the faith of other like-minded people, and you are made stronger. When the going gets tough, as it does, that family of faith will be there for you.

Officially joining your church has nothing to do with any time swap. It’s a commitment to growing your faith, and a recognition of the importance of your faith community in your life. Has your time come?

Be strong in the Lord and be kind!
