Building A Church
Linda Soller | Oct 07, 2024
I was driving along the other day when it occurred to me that our Lego Land did not have a church! It’s not so surprising that the Lego company is not pushing religious oriented buildings, but I wondered why my gran-children, and I had not realized it. Clearly, we needed to correct the situation. Naturally it would include a trip to the new Bricks and Mini-figure shop in Herndon. A sacrifice I was willing to make. But first I had to think about what I needed to build a church. Going to the store without a plan could be an expensive mistake.
You probably would not be involved in constructing a church building. You might, on the other hand, be involved with building a congregation ready to welcome a new minister. That is where we find ourselves at this time. So, what would you do? Just as I need a plan for my toy construction, planning is important for identifying a new pastor. The tendency might be to move too quickly in the pastor search. What you really need is to understand your congregation. What it’s like, and where it wants to go. A new minister needs to share your interests and your goals. You need to pray for guidance. Chances are God knows better what is needed than any one of us. And never forget patience. We need to be patient with each other and the process. For me that is the hardest part.
As I consider the fun aspects of building our Lego church, I must not forget it will need a strong foundation. There will be walls, not to block out but to offer shelter to those who enter. What it looks like will not be as important as how it serves God’s purpose for our community and congregation. Building a church is not something to be taken lightly. Being part of the building process is an honor and joy.
Be kind, be brave, have faith! : ) Linda
