A Funny Story

Linda Soller | Mar 25, 2019

This blog is an extension of our Drop-In Class at First Baptist Church. In our class we smile and laugh, a lot! I find humor serves multiple purposes at church. I think it reduces stress. I feel like it is welcoming. I know it can spread joy. I hope our laughter is music to God’s ears. Hopefully the joy we feel when we are at church will stay with us when we leave the building.  I believe our faith is strengthened inside the church, so it can be applied outside the church.

To keep things light, on most Sundays, I insert a Wegman’s story. You see I shop at Wegman’s every Saturday and since I know the topic for my class the following day I am often able to tie the two things together. I think my class laughs because they just never know when I am going to say, “Yesterday I went to Wegman’s …”. Recently I saw an article about a poll identifying “The Most Admired” companies. Lo and behold at the top of the list was Wegman’s. That headline made me smile. Wegman’s beat out the big guys like Amazon, Target, and GE. I learned that even though the individual stores are big, the company is something like the 58thlargest grocery chain. I expected it to be bigger. All this comes back to how we connect our church experience and faith to how we view the world, and our everyday life.

I grew up in a family with a lot of laughter. The lightness of laughter helped keep us positive. I never believed that God’s intention was to build a church where everyonehad to be serious and gloomy. I don’t believe He wants us to judge each other and complain. I feel like He appreciates smiles, and singing, and laughter. Those are outward signs of our inward joy. “Just this past week I went to Wegman’s ….”

Have you got a funny story?

Have a great week? :o) Linda
