Creatures of Habit

Linda Soller | Jul 27, 2015

The Yarn Yarn Sisterhood met for the first time over ten years ago. It started out as a simple gathering intended to allow people who liked to knit and crochet come once a month to enjoy their hobbies together. From the very beginning a decision was made we needed to meet twice a month, once was not enough. We were an enthusiastic group! Some people came to learn and were out of there once they felt they’d learned enough. Some came to get encouragement to finish a project. Some of us clearly came for the social aspects associated with our hobby. For years we met on Tuesday nights rain or shine, seldom canceling our meeting. With time the core group shrank to a smaller, but dedicated, cluster of fiber fans. Last year we changed to Monday nights, we moved our meeting place from the second floor to the first floor of the church, and we stopped having our annual craft sale in the fall. Yet a few weeks ago, on July 12th, there were six of us sitting around our table, talking and laughing, and fiddling with one project or another as though nothing had ever changed. We are geared toward getting together twice a month. We face exceptions and changes, but YYS endures. We are creatures of habit.

As we left the church after our meeting on the 12th I thought, what if we could apply our natural need for routine, for habit, to our faith? What if we didn’t stop and think twice about going to church on a Sunday morning even when tempted to sleep in? What if we prayed continually as we are told in the Bible? What if we planned our lives around our faith instead of squeezing our faith into our already busy lives? Okay, so you may do these things, but I feel pretty certain many of us fall short. We should ask ourselves why because most people really are prone to form habits. Pause for a second and think of those things you do over and over again without hesitation. Take a minute and write down your habits. Do you read this blog each week? Do you exercise daily? Do you always have toast for breakfast? Maybe you start your day with mediation or a walk with your dog. Where is your faith on that list?

YYS has evolved from a simple extra thing to do, to a group of friends who support each other and are there for each other. Some spend time together outside of our meetings and others do not. We come from different parts of the world, are different ages, and have varied skill sets. No matter how long since the last gathering we pick up as though it was yesterday. How close is this description to your faith? Do you share your faith with people from different countries, from different age groups, different socio-economic groups, and with varied knowledge and experience? When we make exercising our faith a habit, it transcends all differences and becomes something so valuable to our lives we can’t imagine going without. You can do it, I know you can, because we are creatures of habit. Put faith at the top of your list.

Have a great week! :o)  Linda

YYS wants to thank the congregation of FBC Herndon for all the years of support.
